Hello ladies, (and maybe guys..yes some of you are here, don't deny it..lol!)

I have recieved amazing amazing looks from you guys, and mehn.. if you are still waiting to submit your entry, DO SO NOW! because the closing dates might be earlier than expected because of the number of entries so far. And yes! bring your A-game. GIRLS are not joking!

Let me also mention that the winner and runner up will get their looks featured on the NEW online store that we are building (did i mention that we are rebranding? new name, pay online, free shipping, sales of hair etc?) and will also get free in store credit? ok now I have said it! in the famous words of WizKid, "my sister, dont dull" Enter HERE

On to today's post!

I am reviewing the 10 PC Mineral Bdellium brush set i just got about 2 months ago or so. I cant count the number of brushes I have, so you would think I would stop buying. When i wanted to purchase this, I was a bit skeptical, but because I already had some good bdellium brushes, it was much more easy to makeup my mind. When I finally received and tested them, I went on my knees and formed some "thank you God" hymns. ( if you know me, then you'll know that I am THAT dramatic, and I form my own songs all the time..lol!)
One thing about this brush set is that, it contains brushes you actually NEED as a makeup artist or as a girl that wants to look good. No rubbish mascara wand that you might already have, no yeye sponge tip applicator that is of no use...

Bdellium brushes boast of antibacterial properties that keep your brushes free of germs even after several washes. Their brushes are a mix of hair and synthetic bristles.
Ok let me tell you what this brush set contains..

964S BLUSHER

This is a blusher brush..the brush is rounded enough to apply blush to the apple of the cheeks and also precise enough to do a subtle contour.

The hairs are also soft and not scatchy

957S PRECISION CHEEK

This is my favourite of all the brushes. They call this precision cheek brush, but please oh please I beg to differ! This is one of the best finishing Kabuki's I have used. It applies both liquid and cream foundation like a dream, buff is powder seamlessly and still applies bronzer and blush to that perfect finish. I'd go on and on but I guess you guys have work to do..hehe!

The right amount of dense, the hairs a EVENLY cut for that ultimate flat top experience! Love love this stuff!

955S FINISHING

This is the stipple brush. This also is a fine brush! it is stiff enough to stipple ( unlike some stipple brushes that cannot even stand against the skin, bendy bendy bristles) and still soft enough to blend.

945S CONTOUR

Another favourite of mine. This is a s direct to the point as possible. It is a contour brush, and it fits PERFECTLY into the hollows of the cheekbones of every client I have used it on for contouring and even blushing.
Because It is small and precise, I also use this to blend under eye concealer and it does a fab job!

942 SLANTED CONTOUR
This is another contour brush. I generally do not like white bristles on my brushes.. why? it is a no brainer. they are not easy to clean. So I rarely use this, and that is because I have other options. when I do use it though, I clean it immediately even on set, with a brush cleaner before I get home to wash the brushes. that is why it is still looking shine shine like this.

Asides from the color, it is a good brush and it contours well. Also contours the nose well and the temples of th head, if you know what you are doing!

776 & 775 BLENDING AND SMALL ANGLE SHADER

Not much to say about this, asides from the fact that it has become one of my most used blending brushes. Infact I have 2 of this and the second one is already almost brown, lol

It is good for applying transition color especially on small eyelids, because it gets the coor exactl where you want it. Very precise.

The angled shader brush is really good for creating and blending outer Vs. After using a small contour brush to apply contour color, this can be used to blend out the outer corner of the eye.

781S CREASE

This is a crease blush for applying colors in the crease to create depth. This brush can also blend concealer around the eyebrows to remove that ojuju look!

769S ANGLED CONTOUR

THE PRECISE CUT ON THIS BRUSH IS WHAT GETS ME! this is supposed to be an eye brush, but I use mine to apply contour on the bridge of the nose most times. If you know/like the ELF eye blending brush, then think of this one with a precise angle cut!

755S SMUDGER

You know how i said the kabuki is my favourite out of the bunch, ok this is my 2nd favourite. I'm sure you are thinking this small kenkele brush

Well I use this tiny brush to place highlight underneath my brow, it is very precise, i use this tiny brush to place color in the inner color of my eye, I us this tiny brush to line my waterline with different colors, smudge it and the blend it! I also us this tiny brush to contour the nose if I want a highly defined contour look! so yeah, I love it!

ROLL UP POUCH!

when i wanted to buy this I didnt think so much about this. But I should have because I was actually in need of a roll up pouch. My Tara Orekelewa brush pouch that I have been using for over 6 years had started to give way. I was  kind of disappointed when I got this because it wouldn't contain all my brushes BUT I HAD TO DO SOMETHING! so i used a razor blade to cut out the little pockets by the side into 2 big giant pockets. So these pockets contain my real techniques core collection, my ecotools kabuki set, all my individual kabuki, my royal care kabuki set...lets just say this pouch carries A LOT
if you can be creative! This just further confirmed the saying äll things are possible!"lool

ALL IN ALL, this brush set was worth the money I spent on it, it cost me about 60 pounds, and I had to reorder for sale. This set costs N16,000 at the online store ( oya carry your calculator and convert it..lool!), and also the individual Kabuki and blending bruses are also available! You can place your order HERE

I'll also give you the gist of the launching of the new beauty store, we have partnered with companies like DHL and Interswich,  to make life easier and cut shipping costs!! There will also be freebies for our first *** customers, we haven't decided yet! We are also expanding toaccomodate weaves, hair care products etc.. so you can get ALL you need at once! make sure you go to the existing onlin store and sign up for newsletters o you'll be the first to hear about it!

That's it guys!  Thanks for reading as always

REVIEW: MAC RELENTLESSLY RED

$

Hi girls! kilon pop?

What is popping with is this new MAC lippie I just added to my lipstick collection.
So I was looking for another type of red, that wasn't bluish or orangey. so i  came across this shade  RELENTLESSLY RED on their website and decided to go check on the web for a proper swatch. My go to site for swatches of Mac Lipsticks is http://www.temptalia.com/ . No doubt!

I liked what I saw and I got it! Let's just say I wasn't disappointed seeing as the shade was just what I was looking for! You just gats give it to MAC when it comes to lipstick shades!

This is a RETRO MATTE lipstick, just like MAC RUBY WOO. It is a red shade with a bright pink tone. You look at it, it looks red, then you look again, it looks pink. Ok look at it this way. Red and Pink lipstick have been banned in Nigeria, but then you go ahead and use this one since it is in between. Then you jam LASTMA on the road....."REVISE!! PULL OVER!! that is what you will hear!!! because the truth is I don't know where this lipstick falls, if it is pink or if it is red. All I can say is that MAC did a great job doing this shade.

Shade asides, it is well pigmented and really matte, ruby woo matte. And I must have said it a thousand times that I am not a Ruby Woo fan because of its dryness, due to my overdried, chapped lips. No no my lips are the driest in this world, just believe it and don't ask me if I have checked people's  lips in  to Sudan....lol
But for this lipstick I really try to go an extra mile, scrubbing and moisturizing right before I use it etc
But that only lasts me a couple of minutes, before the cracks start showing up. Yep it is that bad.

In conclusion
  •  the shade is a STUNNER
  • it is well pigmented
  • it goes on smoothly enough for moisturised lips
  • It is LONG LASTING!!
  • It is matte and dry, Can seep into cracks and lines easily.
So if you are a lover of matte lipsticks or maybe RUBYWOO, this is an awesome lipstick to have! chances are, if you do not have this lipstick, you have never come across this shade before!
They say if you love something, let it go...NA LIE!! If you love something, hold on to it...is exactly what i am doing with this lippie, I love it, and I'm holding on to it because I know one day one day, this lip situation will be solved! Amen somebody?!!! haha!
Oh and I already did a makeup look with this lipstick for guys, so check  back so you don't miss it!

You can check out this lipstick at the MAC stores in Ikeja Mall and The Palms for those in Lagos, or any other MAC vendor. This lipstick will be in stock at the online store when we finally relaunch!

Hello people! how is it going?
The giveaway competition is still on. click HERE for details

I know i have said it here before about how I forget to do posts on the actual makeup work that I do. Which is funny because it was one of the reasons I started blogging. I guess the wind has blown me to another direction, but I shan't gree. lol. I will remain on course.

So i did series of shoots last year (If you follow Olumakeovers on Instagram- you most likely would have seen these looks), this is one of them. I wanted to do a traditional look so I used the benin/edo beads attire.

I wanted a kind of healthy glow without an overpowering look. I wanted a subtle look that would still look glamorous, so I went crazy with my blending. I did a mix of golden and coral tones on the eyes amd also a not too flasy coral on the lips. I used a nice orange blush and added some bronzer to give a healthy glow.

Tip: Check your blending with a harsh camera flash, if it looks seMless, then you are good to go.

About this look..

I did this makeup using bhcosmetics 120pallette 5th edition.  First I used a black pencil to drawbout d lid and I blended it with a brush and applied the black eyeshadow.I highlighted the inner corner of the eye with a gold eyeshadow to enable the eye pop. I used a brown eyeshadow to blend the black out into the outer crease. For the brow I used a davis pencil number 18 and a miss rose brow filler. And milani concealer in 04 tan to highlight it.
For the lips I decided to make it pinkish and nude because the eyes are already dramatic. I wanted the lips to calm the look down.

Hello my name is Adaobi OKafor
About The Look...
I went with a smokey eye, I made the look more interesting by using gold glitter eye shadow as opposed to normal eye shadow on my lid and I put some stones on my outer crease. For this look, I want the eyes to be the main focus, so I contoured my face and went for nude lips
Why I Love This Blog...
I love your blog because I get a lot of inspiration from it……cliché I know but I live for those pictorials, you make it all so easy.
In 2014..
I would love to see more, more and more pictorials!!!

My name is Toluwalase Davies. I'm a student. You'll notice that my make-up isn't very 'professional' but that's because I just started practising last year.

About This Look..
'mary kay' eye shadow set ,light pink and black for the sides of my eyes. The shadow set comes with red blush so I used a dab of that,yøu'll notice it's lightly applied in the pictures. Primark artificial eyelashes(comes with it's own glue in a tiny tub). For my eyebrows, just used the regular 100 Naira kind. Then for my lips,I couldn't decide on whether to use my pink l or orange lipstick. I finished it up with Black Opal 02 Light finishing powder.

Why I Love This Blog..
I love your blog because yøu always come across as a pleasant and down-to-earth woman who would be nice to work with.

In 2014...
I would like to see a tutorial about how to apply the smokey eye-shadow, how to use foundation.

About this look...
Eyes-smokey eyes I applied orange and dark pink above the crease then I applied black eyeshadow then drew outward , I lined the  water line with white to make the eyes look bigger
Lips: subtle pink lips

Why I love This Blog...
I love your blog because it keeps me updated on makeup trends

REVIEW: MEET THE BRAND: HAIRVEN

$

Hello people, how is it going?
I am very excited for todays's posts as I am with posts about products that WORK!!!
(and no it is not makeup, surprise!)

You know how i like indigenous brands, it just fills me with so much joy when a Nigerian brand surpasses all expectations and even more! And i love to review them.

You also know how you swore you'd never give your weaves to hair stylists to wash because your former Peruvian weave just magically turned into goat hair after they washed it? Yes i have been there before, and it is why I'd like to introduce this brand to you guys....

I met the owners of this brand at the Beauty Fair organized by Pops Concept last year, while I was buying from their stand. The obvious passion they had for the hair products was one of the reasons i got the products. I was like " on top all this mouth, this tin must work" and it DID! x_x

Ok here's what the company has to say:

 ABOUT US
At HAIRVEN, we pride ourselves with manufacturing products that meet the after care needs of clients from different walks of life. We have carefully designed our range of products to add moisture, shine and bounce to your human hair extensions while ensuring zero breakage and shedding of your natural hair. We believe that EVERY woman can have beautiful and healthy hair, whether you’re rocking your natural locks or styling your relaxed hair with hair extensions. HAIRVEN hair care products are paving the way to beautiful hair with our recommended hair regimens created to ensure healthy haired clients.
So what are you waiting for? Join the HAIRVOLUTION.  Say NO to dry,  tangled and damaged hair. Say YES TO Softer, Silkier and Lustrous hair.

OUR HAIRVENLY PRINCIPLE

We believe the beauty of a woman lies in her hair. Hence, our mission is to build the pride and self-confidence of every woman through the provision of the best quality hair care products that are carefully designed to bring out individuality and natural beauty at affordable prices.

OUR CORE VALUES

Quality products.

Customer-Focus.
Product Development.
Affordable pricing.

      OUR VISION

To be the leading African brand in Quality

and Affordable hair-care products.

Do I think this is true? YES! the products do what they say, their prices are affordable! Ok let's get to the review of the products I bought:

Moisturize and Soften Shampoo

What They Say:

"This shampoo is a conditioning, revitalizing and cleansing shampoo that infuses life into fine or limp hair. It is especially formulated to purify hair extensions while giving it body and shine"

What i think:
It really softens. I tried this product on my DEAD weave ( like I wouldn't try something i had not heard of before on something new), i call it dead because I have been using this weave for about 5 years, and it just didn't look healthy anymore. So I washed it with this product. Even before putting in the conditioner, I could feel the softness in  my weave. Unlike some shampoos it didn't leave it hard and stringy. So is this really a Moisturizing and Softening shampoo? you bet!
PRICE: N1500

Moisturize and Soften Conditioner

What they say:
This conditioner is good adjustable conditioning for all human hair extension types with silk protein & natural botanical extracts.
Dry damaged and chemically treated hair extensions benefits from treatment with protein and amino acids that can penetrate and rebuild damaged hair due to differing molecular weights.

What I think:
I LOOOOVE this product especially! Bomb! Bomb! All I can say is Sooooooffffftttt and Fragrance!  It just brought my dead weave back to life because it made it Sooofft and smooth, absolutely detangledit and  made it shiny. Yes it made it shiny. Imagine after washing a dry and damaged hair and u see the result is soft, smooth and shiny?! And the fragrance is what I love best about this product. It smells like....urm vanilla? roses? ermm I don't know...but it smells REALLY GOOD!
PRICE : 1500

I also use this conditioner to condition my makeup brushes after washing them. Multipurpose!

Packaging is sleek, with how to instructions on the label...

other products in their line

Serum
PRICE : 1600
leave in conditioner

PRICE: 1400
My friend got the Leave in conditioner and I requested for her feedback. She told me that it really did work in detangling and moisturizing her weave!

OVERALL
I like these products
They actually work
AFFORDABLE
Their fragrance is to die for
Packaging is sleek and pretty
It is a Nigerian brand!

Do i recommend this? My sisters (and maybe brothers) if you have weaves you cherish, old ,new, dead, alive, and you want to save money from washing at salons (not to talk of how they use those green and orange colored shampoos you never know their brand names?) you should definitely try this out. Definitely!

You can get these products on www.konga.com and there is a 10% off valentine season discount!

Hello sweeties! How is it going?
So this is the Valentine look i promised, nothing ghenghen, I kept this look very simple and wearable, something most ladies (and their bobos) can relate to.

I did a smokey look on the eye and blended out the edges with a plum toned matte eyeshadow

I also smudged the under eye with the same color I used on the eyelids.

For the face, I just wanted warmth. what more to give warmth than an orangey brown blush and a bright shimmer blush. I used the same highlighter on my nose as with my browbone.

I also did not want a matte matte look so I didnt blot out my foundation, neither did I "set" it. I just used a powder brush to brush over.

and for my lips, I decided to go nude. I love my nude lips with smokey eyes anyday anytime. Nude lips just somehow speak!

PRODUCTS USED

EYES
Eyelid colors from Sleek Storm Palette
Vblack radiance precision eyeliner

Iman Oil blotting powder in Earth Dark and Medium
Black opal blush in Cayenne and Ginger

MEET THE BRAND: REVIEW: TARA (NEW BLACK PACKAGING

Hello guys! How's it going?

Today I'll be talking about yet another Indigenous makeup brand that we have all come to know. Honestly if you do not know TARA just slowly and gently remove that rock you have been sleeping under!
Anyway the truth is, I never cared much about Tara's product. From the eyeshadow fallouts to the not just flattering lipgloss, and then the packaging urgh! Infact people used to ask me why I never used to use Tara products as I attended the makeup school...Also sometimes their sales rep try to convince  me about the product, and I have that "look you are preaching to the choir, as one of the earliest set at the Tara school we used these products and even tested some of them before they went into production, so I know" LOL. Apparently I was living in the past and I didn't know how awesome some of their new products are. Take for example, the Eyeshadow base, I bought the silver packaging one day, I went to play at the Lekki studio, I haven't found any other base far better. Even NYX jumbo pencil in milk CANNOT stand near this eyeshadow base. Dem no be mates!

Anyway anyway, I heard through the grapevine that the new products are the bidness! I also read on blogs that the products had improved and surpassed expectation, so I did what? I hopped on it. I mean look at the shades of those lipsticks, who wouldn't?

So these are a few products I got ( trust them to be lip products)

These are called the MATTE LIPCOLOR. As far as packaging goes, I think these lippies are a makeup artist dream! Why?? It doesn't take space!! YOu would fit in 5 of these lippies into where would originally  take maybe 3 MAC lippies. That I absolutely love!
Great texture as these are not drying mattes! Infact not all the shades are matte, some have satin finishes. Texture wise, I loove it! and Pigmentation wise, these are really good. Thumbs up to the TARA team!
Check out the shades and swatches

This shade is a whitish coral shade, that can be used as a highlighter when doing ombre lips. Infact, except it is an editorial shoot I don't see how any body can rock this alone, so I did a swatch to show how I would wear it.

I picked out my favourite colors out of the 18 shades or so, that they have. They also have a beautiful red called Jemila, but I said to myself enough of all the reds!!

The new lip pencils are FAB-uuuL-LOUS! They are pigmented and they apply smoothly!

L-R EREWAI, EBIERE, ADERE, TAKUERE

HIGH SHINE LIP STAINS

The high shine lip stains are also pigmented and are thick. As you all know I"m not a fan of lip gloss, so well... but I chose to include this in the review because they are actually very pigmented. And also I like the formular

L-R NANA, NANDI, NEFERTITI

There are other products in this their new black package, like Blushes, Eyeshadow palettes, their popular trio eyeshadow, and I think one of their best products, their eyebrow pencils! I love those!

In conclusion, this a VERY welcome rebranding, I like how they stepped up their game to compete with the new emerging brands, I mean they have been here for so long, It is only natural that people might get tired and hop on to new brands, but with these new hot shades, they are back with a what?? A BANG!! I AM VERY IMPRESSED! (though they still need to work on their eyeshadow palettes, surprisingly their trio eyeshadows are great!! why can't they use the same formula?? urgh!)
Kudos to the Tara team!!

You can get these products at the online store! ( no we don't carry last!) CLICK HERE

So what do you guys think? Has anyone tried out products from this new packaging? what are your Tara favs and not so favs?! Use the comment box, you might be helping someone! ( and oh before I forget their Powder palette is FAB, I have used it a couple of times, out of someone else's kit, but I haven't bought mine yet..I don't know why!) Sooooo let's share!!

Till later my beauties!

EVENT: HOUSE OF TARA CENTRO MALL LAUNCH

$

Hello guys! How is the new week going?

I was invited to the HOUSE OF TARA new studio launch at the Centro mall in Lekki.
As you may have gathered, I don't attend makeup events much, I tend to shy away because I'm a typical indoor person, it takes a lot for me to baff, dress up and go out!

Anyway, I wanted to attend this, because I had heard and seen pictures of the new studio. So I wanted to go feed my eyes. Surprisingly it was smaller than what I had anticipated, I don't know where I got the idea that the studio was large and grand! lol!

But size asides, the studio looked good, products were well arranged, and overall the ambience was nothing short of a well placed, quality studio. Check out the pics..

Oh and yes, they also launched new products like their HD matte foundation. I have heard reviews, and I have personally seen it on someone who wore it for a long time, and all I can say, I WILL try it! and i'll get back to you! MOre new products like eyebrow fillers, contour kits etc etc..Yes TARA has stepped up her game, and I am soo inspired!

OK so onto the launch parrrry itself

Orange carpet tinzzz! (lol please forgive me!)

One of the highligths of the evening for me was meeting fellow makeup artistes and bloggers, it is always nice to put a personality behind the pictures

Precious of dazzlebeautie! Check out that baddyy! It was so lovely finally meeting her!

Ngozi of JagaBeauty! I hadn't seen her in a while, funny thing is we learned together at Tara wayy back! And let me tell you now, her brows have always been on point, even back then when we didn't use to use concealer to paint!
That igbochick! If you do not know her blog, bia!! where have you been?!!

Stella of stella's addiction! This is awa big sistur in the blogging world, I have known and been reading her blog for a very long time! Her blog was one of the few that inspired me to start mine!

And on the left is me! :D

And there was this evil fan blowing out everybody's weaves. If one went there with dripping wet hair, the hair would have dried and set itself under 20 minutes. Who needs a drier!! And I just wanna thank God that this fan did not open my nyash to the world. It could have blown my wig off! If that had happened, I would have just pretended to faint, so people would start fanning me, and they would have rushed me out, at least they wouldn't have remembered the flying wig!

Oh and BEZ was there to serenade the crowd!

And my beauriiful handbag for the day...thank you for not putting me in a position where I'd have sat down alone and chewed my mouth to Bez songs seeing as I know only one! Daalu :*

Thank you guys for reading as always!!!
have a great ahead!
Cheers!

Hello my people!!
Everyday everyday I say to myself at the beginning of the day, I have to post on the blog. But after working all day, no strength left to do makeup, take like 200 pictures, edit, compose a post, wait for the spoilt banana we call internet here In Nigeria to upload pics etc... by the time I think of all these things, im already snoring. *sigh* It hasnt been easy at all. The online store has been taking 99% of my time (y'all do not want to know the stress involved..lol).
Even I Have been feeling bad, because this blog and OlúMakeovers now seem like the neglected first born, social media 2nd born, new online store, last born (for now hehe)...and we all know which of the children enjoy most! #teamlastborn *batting eyelashes*

*oh and I have an exciting annoucement down this post* Heyyy!! Come back and look at the pictures first, dont just scroll down!! Ha! you pipu!!
Today's post is a makeup post, with the title you already know what it is! This look is full on glitter!

On the eyes I used gold and red glitter dust from Mehron, you havent seen glitter finer than this, I assure you.
I wish i could have shown you guys the techniques I used to blend my glitters together, because glitter or not, I hate flag eye look..I always blend, sometimes to a fault. I am still working on my video channel, these things take strength!

Can you guys see the massive break out on my face. STRESS!! Infact right now as I type, I have two boil looking pimples on my face. One is underneath my eye, and it so large, it looks like an agbero punched me in the eye. I am not even kidding.
And then there is another one under my lip that looks like I went to pierce my lip under Ojuelegba bridge. I dont even know what to do again.

Anyways, acne or not, I still have to do what I have to do right? Ah, the love of makeup
Then for the lip I used a red lipliner coupled with a fire orange red lipstick. Both Nigerian Products! How cool is that!!

WORK: RITA

Hello guys. hope we are doing great

Today's post is about a bride I did earlier this year. Rita has really good skin and it didnt take much to make shine brai like a diamond..lol.
check out the pics

For her eyes, i used a blend of soft pink eyeshadows. Her eyelids were quite small, and I didnt want the eyecolor to overpower it.
I used Creme Eyelashes in 82 for a nice effect..that is my go to style for brides. It works all the time.

For her brows I used Mac Stud to fill in. I'm not one to overdraw or overfill, or over conceal the brows, i try to keep them as natural as possible. Her natural brow shape are sort of flat, so I altered them and lifted it a little bit to make her eyes appear larger.
For her face, I went with my Graftobian warm 3 palette HD foundation, and chise a sutable shade, and I also mixed it with the ever warm MaryKay foundation in 607. This shade is a must for me for dark people as it warms up the face. Mary Kay shades happen to be one of the perfect shades for black skin. No joke.
For her lips  I used my ever faithful Zaron Lipliner in Fussy Fuschia and MAC Snib lipstick. Went over it with a clear gloss...

and her chiefbridesmaid also got her face beat

Oh how i loved the victorian style inspired dresses! Loved the sleeves...far from the usual monostrap tinzz..lool. Outfits by StichRehab Clothings..

...and off she went to get married!
Thank you Rita for choosing OlúMakeovers! We wish you a fruitful and happy marriage!

The makeupartist collab post I promised will be posted this week. Got so busy last week and I didnt want to post something halfbaked! Sorry for the delay!!
thanks for reading as always!

Till later!

MAKEUPARTIST 101: 5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW- PART 1

Hello guys!!
Just pretend I am not here...seeing as no matter the quantity of cow head I bring as sacrifice will appease you guys...so just pretend that I am not the one writing....

Soooooo the post I have been postponing and postponing is finally up!!
5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW AS A YOUNG MAKEUP ARTIST...
you see there are times I look back ( I am still a young makeup artist though) and I say "I wish someone had told me that!" This business is not as easy as it looks like, carving a niche for yourself, getting the clients, dealing with clients (TRUST ME THIS ONE IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST CHALLENGES!! bridesmaids we see you..lol), funding and so on..it could  prove really difficult and tasking and then eventually, discouraging!! So I thought about this post and I thought to myself It would be a nice idea to gather some colleagues to talk about this.

I will be saying my own in the PART 2 as I have a lot to say..lol!

Anyways, I am GRATEFUL to the amazing and humble makeup artists I contacted that obliged me ( see I received some ELA OJUKAN, but hey!! it is what it is!! lmao)

Osamu of BeautyMatterz accepted me with warm arms, even though I don't quite have a personal relationship with her!

Chika of LCC was even more excited than I was..lol she is such a sweet person!!

Dolapo of Bellezza Faces I trusted with this, because we had done earlier collabos, and she came through chap chap! GIRL! I can't thank you enough!

Then Yemisi of NSURE beauty, even with her new THISDAY cover page feature with other great artists as herself, told me " I am honoured you asked me" IMAGINE! lol such "humbleness!" you owe me one brush set to celebrate your new and well deserved status o!! ehen!

thank you guys so much! y''all inspire me!!

Anyways, ON TO THE MATTER...listen to what they have to say, get your notepads ready, don't let me hear you say you forgot your biro at home, abi your eleganza is not working!!! OK!!  CLASS UP STAND! GREEET!!!......

Keeping records; financial and client records

 Client relations

Networking; while starting I was always more of a loner and I never opened up to other makeup artists (in some ways I'm still that). Looking back, I realize that some people I met would have been great mentors.

Mentoring; although I did contact a couple of 'senior' makeup artists--some responses just scared me right away and that made me think there was no way I could have a makeup artist as a mentor; I wish I had contacted some more people and get my silver lining.

Product Knowledge: not like I didn't work with great brands but I wish I has experimented a bit more!!!"

A GOOD FACE PRIMER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Being a self taught MUA, I had no choice but to learn on the Job. I bought several primers but wasn’t quite sure which was good. This made blending my foundation  a task and it took me time to realize that apart from reducing shine, a good primer just makes your foundation glide and blend in easily.

DON’T TAKE MORE THAT YOU CAN HANDLE.
One of my early jobs was getting makeup done on eight bridesmaids. Happy about the cool cash (as an Ibo girl) and clueless about time management, I believed that I could handle everything. I appeared on the day with no assistants. Till date, I don’t know how I survived that day but it was hectic and really overwhelming. However, I learned a vital lesson which is, you can’t do it all, especially when you have time constraints; so feel free to get helping hands.

ALWAYS HAVE EXTRAS OF YOUR BITS AND PIECES
No matter how careful you are, you should keep extra brow pencils, eye liners, mascaras and smaller products you can lose easily. This would save you a lot of time on days where you just can’t find that particular item in your makeup kit. It also helps to keep extra powder brushes for extra clients on a busy day.

GET A GOOD CAMERA
These days, makeup artists are fast becoming photographers themselves. This is because no matter how good you are, you can’t showcase your skills if you don’t document your work. Often times, a phone doesn't do justice to your pictures, so get a decent camera to build your portfolio. Pictures also help keep track of your growth, and you can use them to see your areas of improvement.

WATCH AND LEARN
As makeup artists, we can learn a few tricks from one another so never feel like you know it all. I used to be shy to ask questions but now I’m better. It’s okay to watch others work if you’re not doing anything. I still learn from online tutorials and I get tips from my colleagues till date. You can only get better if you watch and learn

I wish I knew that makeup is not just about investing in high-end brands, some not so pricey brands can give you great results too. Makeup artistry is a combination of great technique and effective products.

I wish I knew that makeup should be tailor made to suit occasion and the personality of your client. Its not just about using the same 'formula' on everyone that happens to sit on your makeup stool.

I wish I knew how important time management is especially for wedding makeovers and photoshoots. For instance,a hair stylist showing up late or not being on schedule on the wedding morning can affect the amount of time the makeup artist has to work with. You would always get better results when you are not pressed for time.

I wish I knew how to draw the line between friendships and business relationships early enough. If you have to give EVERYONE a discount based on who referred them or how long you have known them, business would grow a lot more slowly.

I wish I knew early enough, the role passion plays in any business,it is what will make you to commit to getting better at what you do, no matter how long it takes

MAKEUP: BROWN SUGAR

Hey guys!

Today's post is a makeup look I named BROWN SUGAR. Honestly I dont know why, but that kept coming to my head when I was looking at the pictures.

I was actually inpsired by my hairstyle ( it is called straw curls, and no you dont have to cut your hair or be a #teamnatural enthusiast). I waNted something really strong, without colors. Not necessarily pretty, but bold. So I chose a brown and plum palette to work with.

I also did a lot of bronzing as I wanted an all over glow!
For the eyes I used all browns and did an exagerrated cat eye, which I think compliments the bareness of the eyes.

Initially I did a bold lip, but later mixed it up with golden tones which I absolutely preffered to the bold lip.

I also did a bold/big brow ( big brows are really not my cup of tea, to be honest), to also complement the bareness of the eyes and also the lack of hair on my head!! (so to speak)
I was just thinking along the lines of NUBIAN PRINCESS lol!

All in all,I enjoyed doing this look, and I think it wears well with the hair!

MEET THE BRAND: LILA'LLI - THE REVIEW

Hello guys! It has been a while, I know *covers face*
I was going to write an epistle about how I decided to take a small break, change in blog look blabla but I guess that is for another post.
Today I am introducing to you guys LILA'LLI !
New brand review?? oh yes! I have missed doing this!
Lila'lli is a British multi-functional cosmetic brand by Nigerian Cosmetic Scientist Amina Ajayi. Lila'lli offers a range of multi-functional colour cosmetics that combines everyday core essentials with bold colours and high quality formulations. This means that the range is all about multi-functionality; using a single product for multiple applications and finishes. For example, their LINE DEFINE FILL which are pencils can be used as eye pencils and lip pencils and lip sticks! So basically, one product has many uses.

So I was contacted by this company from the UK via BeautyKink to set up a meeting. They are looking to launch into the Nigeria market, and also get retailers/stockists for their brand. I met with Amina herself and she explained to me that Lila'lli is a niche brand, just like OCC or Sugarpill and they wanted specific carriers for their products.
Anyways, she walked me through the product and explained what the brand was about, which was kind of refreshing. these days you just get people that want you to REVIEW their products without them really knowing what the brand is about.

Long story short, I was gifted with these amazing babies for review and consideration and here is the rundown of the particular products I received.

LINE DEFINE FILL

I received these two pencils in  Detour (Teal Green) and Shame (Red). The pencils are pigmented and they apply easily. They even dry matte!! So getting a matte bright red is easy without the color seeping into lip cracks!I used the Detour as an eyeshadow, though it was a bit hard to apply all over the eyelid, and it turned out well without creasing. (pics below)

PIGMENT INFUSION

I also received two shades of their Pigment Infusion in Modern Times and Graffiti
L-R Modern Times, Graffitti
These are some products!! The Pigment Infusion can be used as eyeshadows, blushes, bronzer, lipcolor, highlighting and contouring. The products are pigmented and also soft. The metallic one I got, Modern times applied like a,dream while the matte one was not as easy to apply. However it applied well as a blush as opposed to an eyeshadow!

LIP COLLISION

The lip collision I was happy to have received. I hate cluster, I really do. so when I got a lipstick combined with a lip gloss in the same tube and in the SAME SHADE, I kinda said a silent prayer for Lila"lli lol. Probably makeup artistes will understand, sometimes you want that exact lip, matte color in a glossy finish! This just works! and the good thing is the lipsticks are VERY VERY pigmented. One swipe and you can see the opacity already. I got two shades in Audrey and Eva Marie
Eva Marie

Audrey
The Eva Marie went straight into my pro kit because I rarely use pink...rarely, but Audrey! Ah it is a paleish nudish  pink, similar to MAC snob but more wearable alone because it is more subtle. I have been using this since I recieved it as an everyday lipstick and I'm loving it so far. Sometimes I even use the lipgloss! surprisingly so as I also do not like gloss! It is really good!

EYELASHES

I got the eyelashes in II-28. When I had a sit down with Amina I was shown other eyelashes style and they looked good, so I was eager to use this ( besides I have to do a post soon about my new obsessions, I can't get enough of eyelashes). I didn't like these at all, Don't know if it is the style but they felt so heavy and they were pulling down my eyelids. Im hoping I get to use other styles just to be sure if it is the style or the quality of the lashes, because I already like this brand!

Anyway I did a look (hurriedly) with all the products I got..

I used the Detour Pencil as an eyecolor on my entire eyelid and use the Pigment Infusion as a crease color as well as a transition color. I must say the pencils are really good!

I also used the pencil mixed with the same pigmen infusion color to create a purple color I used in my waterline. I used the Pigment Infusuion in Modern Times as a bronzer and cheek color. This one went straight into my personal makeup stack, I just bronzers a lot. Reminded me of one of my all time fav cheek colors  Mary Kay Mineral cheek color in Golden Copper. I used the LINE DEFINE FILL in shame to line my lips and filled it with the Eva Marie and Audrey Lip Collision.

And then I found a sweet recipe for a pale pink lip suitable for brides, smokey eyes and somewhat nude lips. I used the Zaron Lip pencil in Brick Chick, Lila'lli Lip collision in Audrey and House of Tara Matte Lip color in Zakka! I really really love this!

So that;s it guys! All I can say is I ant wait for Lila"lli to be in Nigeria. The multifunctional angle is one that trips me, lol and the products are of good quality. Packaging is top notch, quite better than some the Indigenous ones we have currently. Thumbs up to Lila''lli! Nigeria cannot wait to have you!!

Kindly share our thoughts in the comment box below, I always love to get your feedback!
